Types of Business Accommodation: 7 Options for Business Travellers

Business travellers don’t always need a traditional hotel. Depending on the length and purpose of the trip, they may choose business hotels, serviced apartments, corporate housing, extended-stay hotels or more affordable alternatives.

What Are Business Travel Accommodations?

Business travel accommodations are lodging options tailored for professionals on work-related trips. These establishments offer a range of benefits and amenities that are not available in traditional hotels. They provide comfort, convenience, and amenities to make business travel easier and work without tiring.  They are close to the work-related venue for convenience, offering flexible workplace-to-wellness programs.  Business travellers who are trying to reduce accommodation cost can compare different booking sites before making reservation

Requirements of Business Travellers

  • Reliable, fast Wi-Fi
  • Comfortable bed and room
  • Work desk/workspace
  • Convenient location
  • Breakfast
  • Business centre or meeting facilities
  • Airport/railway transportation
  • Reliable service
  • Easy check-in/check-out
  • Food and dining options

Factors to Consider When Choosing Business Lodging

When choosing the right business accommodation, several important factors should be considered. Business travellers generally look for a convenient location, easy access to transportation, reliable connectivity, useful amenities and reasonable pricing.

Here are some key factors business travellers should consider when choosing accommodation.

1. Location

Ideally, business accommodation should be close to the airport, railway station, business district, IT park or client’s office. A convenient location can save time and reduce the stress of travelling between the hotel, workplace and meeting venues.

Travellers should also consider whether the area is safe and close to essential facilities such as medical facilities, restaurants, pharmacies and shopping areas.

2. Easy Access to Transport

Location alone is not sufficient for business travellers. Accommodation should ideally have convenient access to buses, metro, trains, taxis and other local transportation.

The distance from the airport, railway station, bus stand or private bus pickup point can also be an important consideration. Easy access to transportation helps travellers reach their destinations more efficiently and makes it easier to attend meetings, conferences and appointments.

Although business accommodation is primarily designed for professionals, the rooms may also be suitable for solo travellers, couples, families and groups of friends, depending on the property and room category.

3. Dedicated Workspace

A proper workspace is an important requirement for business travellers who need to work from their hotel room.

A useful business-friendly workspace should ideally include:

  • A comfortable desk
  • A proper chair
  • Adequate lighting
  • Convenient power outlets
  • Sufficient space for a laptop and documents

A well-designed workspace allows professionals to work comfortably without having to depend entirely on the hotel lobby or business centre.

4. Reliable Connectivity

Fast and reliable Wi-Fi is one of the most important requirements for business travellers.

Travellers may need internet access for video calls, emails, downloading and uploading documents, cloud-based work and communication with clients or colleagues. Slow or unstable Wi-Fi can interrupt video conferences, delay downloads and make it difficult to complete important work.

Therefore, business travellers should check whether the property provides reliable and secure Wi-Fi before booking.

5. Useful Amenities

Business travellers may also look for amenities that make their stay more convenient and comfortable.

Some useful amenities include:

  • Parking
  • Airport or local transportation
  • Private cabs
  • Breakfast
  • Room service
  • Laundry facilities
  • 24-hour security
  • Swimming pool or recreational facilities
  • Flexible check-in and check-out

Not every business traveller needs all these facilities. Requirements can vary depending on the length, purpose and budget of the trip.

For example, a traveller on a one-night business trip may primarily need Wi-Fi, a workspace and convenient transportation, while someone staying for several weeks may place greater importance on laundry facilities, a kitchen, parking and recreational facilities.

6. Price

Despite the term business accommodation, prices can vary widely depending on the city, location, season, local events, hotel category and available facilities.

Business travellers can choose accommodation according to their budget and requirements. It is advisable to check the prices for pay at hotel and pay now and book which is cheaper option.

For example, a budget business hotel may provide basic facilities such as Wi-Fi, a workspace and breakfast, while a premium business hotel may offer meeting rooms, executive lounges, transportation and additional services.

Generally, accommodation with more facilities and services may cost more. However, business travellers should compare price, location, facilities and services rather than choosing accommodation based only on the lowest price. If you are staying for short duration, some hotels offers 3 nights for the price of 2 which is the excellent way to save money on hotel reservation.

A slightly more expensive hotel in a convenient location may sometimes be more practical than a cheaper hotel that requires a long and costly daily commute.

Suppose you require the accommodation for short period for 3, 6, or 9 hours , instead of booking for the full night you can book the hotel on hourly basis and save money.

Example: Choosing Business Accommodation in Pune

Suppose I am travelling to Pune for a business trip. My first consideration would be where my work is located.

If my work is in Shivajinagar, I would look for accommodation nearby because it is centrally located and has convenient access to the railway station and other parts of the city. If my work is in Viman Nagar, I would prefer a hotel in that area because of its proximity to Pune Airport. For work in the Baner or Hinjewadi IT hubs, staying close to the workplace would be more practical than choosing a cheaper hotel in another part of Pune.

I would also consider road accessibility and traffic. Pune is a large city and travelling even a relatively short distance can take considerable time during busy periods. Therefore, I would not look only at the distance on a map; I would also consider how easily I can travel between the hotel and my workplace.

After location and accessibility, I would check the hotel’s amenities. Reliable Wi-Fi, a clean and comfortable room, a proper workspace and breakfast would be important to me. If required, I would also look for parking, transport facilities or meeting facilities.

Finally, I would compare prices on different apps which gives cheapest hotel booking in India and find hotels that meet my requirements. I would not necessarily choose the cheapest hotel. A hotel that costs slightly more but saves significant travelling time and provides better facilities may offer better overall value.

For a business trip to Pune, therefore, my priorities would be location, accessibility, essential amenities and then price. Some time last-minute hotels in India get cheaper, for that check the apps and compare the final price after taxes.

7 Types of Accommodation for Business Travellers

Business travellers have different accommodation needs depending on the length of their trip, budget, location and type of work. While business hotels remain a popular choice, extended-stay hotels, serviced apartments, corporate housing, boutique hotels, budget accommodation and apartments can also provide comfortable and practical options.

1. Business Hotels

A business hotel is an accommodation designed primarily to meet the needs of people travelling for corporate or professional work. These hotels are generally located near business districts, airports, railway stations, IT parks and other commercial areas.

They usually provide facilities such as high-speed Wi-Fi, comfortable workspaces, meeting rooms, business centres and dining options.

Advantages

  • Convenient locations near business districts and transport hubs
  • Specialised business amenities
  • Comfortable workspace
  • High-speed internet
  • Meeting and conference facilities
  • Professional environment
  • Opportunities for networking

Disadvantages

  • Higher cost compared with budget accommodation
  • Limited locations in smaller cities
  • Business-focused atmosphere may feel less relaxed
  • Less flexibility than apartments or extended-stay accommodation

Business hotels are particularly suitable for short business trips, although they can also work well for leisure travellers who prefer convenient locations and good facilities.

2. Extended-Stay Hotels

An extended-stay hotel is designed for guests who need temporary accommodation for a longer period, such as several weeks or months, rather than just a few nights.

These properties often provide features such as in-room kitchens or kitchenettes, furnished living spaces, Wi-Fi and laundry facilities. Weekly or monthly rates may also make them more economical than paying the standard nightly hotel rate for a long stay.

Advantages

  • Weekly or longer-stay rates
  • Lower overall cost for longer stays
  • Kitchen facilities can reduce meal expenses
  • Furnished living space
  • Laundry facilities
  • More comfortable for longer business assignments

Disadvantages

  • Kitchen facilities may be limited
  • Fewer recreational facilities than full-service hotels
  • Less social interaction
  • Can sometimes cost more than short-term rental alternatives
  • Living space may be smaller than a standard apartment

Extended-stay hotels are suitable for business travellers staying for several weeks or longer, especially when they want hotel services combined with some of the convenience of a home.

3. Serviced Apartments

A serviced apartment is a fully furnished living space that combines the comfort and privacy of a home with hotel-like services such as housekeeping, reception and maintenance.

Serviced apartments are available for both short- and long-term stays. Some properties offer larger units, including two-bedroom and two-bathroom apartments, making them particularly useful for business travellers who need more space.

They often include high-speed internet and kitchen facilities, which can help reduce meal expenses during longer stays.

Advantages

  • Fully equipped kitchen
  • Furnished living space
  • Housekeeping and hotel-like services
  • More privacy
  • Quieter environment
  • More space than a standard hotel room
  • Suitable for both short and long stays
  • Can reduce food and accommodation costs during longer stays

Disadvantages

  • May cost more than a standard rental apartment
  • Availability can be limited outside major cities
  • Fewer luxury facilities than some full-service hotels
  • Daily rates can be relatively high for very short stays

Serviced apartments are suitable for business and leisure travellers, particularly those who want more space, privacy and the convenience of a kitchen.

4. Corporate Housing / Corporate Apartments

Corporate housing is a fully furnished temporary home, such as an apartment, condominium or house, provided to professionals who need accommodation for an extended period.

Corporate housing generally includes furniture, an equipped kitchen, high-speed internet, utilities and a dedicated workspace. It is particularly useful for employees on extended assignments, relocations or long-term projects.

Advantages

  • Lower cost per night for longer stays
  • More space to live and work comfortably
  • Furnished accommodation
  • Kitchen facilities can reduce meal expenses
  • Greater privacy
  • Suitable for longer business assignments
  • Can be more economical than staying in a hotel for an extended period

Disadvantages

  • Some properties may require a minimum stay
  • May cost more than certain extended-stay hotels
  • Less flexibility than a hotel for short stays
  • Amenities may be more limited than in full-service hotels
  • Availability may be limited in some locations

Corporate housing is generally better suited to business travellers staying for several weeks or months rather than someone making a short business trip.

5. Boutique Hotels

A boutique hotel is usually a smaller, more intimate hotel that provides a personalised experience and often reflects the character or culture of its location. Boutique hotels generally have fewer rooms than large hotel chains.

For business travellers, boutique hotels can offer a combination of comfortable rooms, good Wi-Fi, convenient locations and a more personalised atmosphere.

Advantages

  • Personalised service
  • Comfortable and attractive rooms
  • More intimate atmosphere
  • Unique design and local character
  • Greater personal attention
  • Good privacy
  • Can provide a distinctive business-trip experience

Disadvantages

  • Rates can be higher than standard hotels
  • Limited facilities compared with large business hotels
  • Fewer meeting and conference facilities
  • Limited availability in some destinations

Boutique hotels can be suitable for business travellers who want comfort, privacy and a more personalised experience, particularly when travelling to major cities.

6. Budget Hotels, Hostels and B&Bs

Budget hotels, hostels and bed-and-breakfasts (B&Bs) provide lower-cost accommodation with basic facilities. Depending on the property, facilities may include Wi-Fi, comfortable rooms, breakfast and common areas.

Although they may not offer the facilities of a business hotel, they can be useful for business travellers who are more concerned about keeping accommodation costs low.

Hostels generally provide dormitory-style accommodation along with shared bathrooms and common areas, making them one of the more affordable options.

Many B&Bs provide accommodation along with breakfast and may also offer free Wi-Fi.

Advantages

  • Lower accommodation costs
  • Good option for budget-conscious business travellers
  • Can be located in convenient areas
  • Hostels provide opportunities for social interaction
  • B&Bs may include breakfast
  • Money saved on accommodation can be used for other travel expenses

Disadvantages

  • Limited business facilities
  • Fewer amenities
  • Less privacy in hostel accommodation
  • Shared bathrooms may be available
  • Space and comfort can be limited
  • Quality and cleanliness can vary between properties

Budget accommodation is best suited to business travellers who want to minimise accommodation expenses and do not require extensive hotel facilities.

7. Apartments and Other Alternative Accommodations

Apartments and other alternative accommodations can provide another option for business travellers, particularly those staying for several weeks or months.

Apartments may include one-, two-, three- or four-bedroom units and can be rented on a short-term or monthly basis, depending on the property and local regulations. Furnished apartments may also provide housekeeping, kitchen facilities, Wi-Fi and private living spaces.

They can be particularly useful for corporate guests and business travellers who need more space than a traditional hotel room.

Advantages

  • More living space
  • Kitchen facilities
  • Greater privacy
  • Suitable for longer stays
  • Can be cost-effective for extended stays
  • Separate areas for living and working
  • More home-like environment

Disadvantages

  • Limited hotel-style services
  • Availability can vary by location
  • Parking may be limited
  • Property rules and restrictions may apply
  • Noise can sometimes be an issue
  • Housekeeping may be less frequent than in hotels

Apartments and alternative accommodation are particularly suitable for business travellers who need more space, privacy and flexibility during a longer stay.

A regular hotel can also be a good choice for business travel if it provides the location, Wi-Fi, workspace, transportation, and other facilities the traveller needs.

Therefore, business travellers should not choose accommodation based only on its label as a “business hotel.” They should compare location, facilities, price, reviews, and specific trip requirements before booking.
