Whether you’re a solo traveler, a backpacker, a couple, or a family on a budget, there are plenty of affordable accommodation options that offer great value without sacrificing comfort.

From budget hotels and hostels to guesthouses, homestays, and smart booking hacks — this blog reveals the best tips, tools, and destinations to help you travel smart in 2025. Find out how to score great deals, choose the right type of stay, and explore cheap international getaways without compromising on experience.

How to find affordable accommodation when travelling in expensive countries?

The cheapest accommodations are already sold out, so to secure the low price, book as early as possible. Use the comparison sites to compare the accommodations, prices, and reviews. Hostels are the cheapest among all; some of them provide a kitchen, where you can cook your own meal. In expensive countries, hostels are also more expensive than in cheaper countries, but still affordable.

You can also look for deals on hotel booking websites and see what offers are included, like free breakfast, coffee, laundry services, etc.

You can set your budget. Three-star hotels or Airbnb for under $ 200 per night will not be possible within the budget

My secret to finding budget-friendly accommodation

I am using Google Maps to find budget-friendly accommodations. It shows the hotels in the area in which you are searching, with the name of the hotel, price, and area. It is the easiest way compared to comparing the prices on websites. Another way I am using is direct contact with the hotels. Sometimes, the staff at the hotels offers rooms at affordable prices with some additional perks. Most of the time, I am not booking online, but directly going to the hotel, bargaining, and getting the hotel at cheap rates. But this is not always true; sometimes you may be in trouble. Outside hotels are always cheaper than centrally located hotels.

Find the cheapest places to stay when travelling

The cheapest places to stay are generally found in Vietnam, Nepal, Bhutan, Albania, Indonesia, and Thailand.  South East Asia is one of the most popular cheap holiday destinations.  Thailand is best for solo travellers. If you want to travel on a budget, you should travel to these places.

Cheap places to visit in India are Darjeeling in West Bengal, Sikkim, Meghalaya, and McLeod Ganj. Jaipur is one of the most affordable places, offering an enchanting blend of history, architecture, and royal grandeur. You can also visit Hampi, Rishikesh, Varanasi, and Munnar in South India.  There are many cheap hotels in India for budget travellers that are clean, safe, and affordable.

Find a cheap alternative to hotels

Hotels are generally costly, but there are many alternatives to hotels that are available at a lower cost, with necessary amenities and are in a good location. Couchsurfing and house-sitting are usually free, while hostels and camping are the most affordable. Affordable alternatives to hotels for families and groups are RV rentals, Airbnb, apartment hotels, VRBO, and HostelWorld. Traditional bed & breakfasts are exceptionally affordable, sometimes more than hostels and provide free breakfast. B&Bs are cheaper but also have a luxury version. It is best for solo travellers. To save more money on your stay, you can book hourly hotels instead of a full-night stay.

How to save Rs. 10,000 on your next trip?

Use these smart tips to save money on your next trip

Direct booking – many hotels have policies that allow you to get the best price, as well as additional perks like upgrades and late check-outs:

Book in advance – Find the best time to book hotels, usually 10 to 15 days before travel and for peak season, 15 days

Use Promo codes and seasonal offers – Platforms like Holy Hotels provide exclusive deals for early booking, longer stay, or festival discounts.

Use Google Maps– Go to the map, zoom in, and look for the places on the map. Contact the hotel directly from the map itself.

Use social media – Hotels/homestays have their own social media account, get the contact information, and call them up. You will easily get 10% discount.

Avoid peak season – During the peak season, hotel rates are high; use the off-season to visit the place.

1. What is the meaning of Affordable Stay?

An affordable stay refers to budget-friendly accommodation that offers the essentials—clean rooms, safety, basic amenities, and a convenient location—without the high price tag.

Instead of luxury services, these stays focus on:

  • Comfort and cleanliness
  • Wi-Fi and other essential utilities
  • Accessibility to transport and city hubs
  • Functional, no-frills design
  • Value for money

In short, an affordable stay gives you everything you need for a good night’s sleep without compromising your budget. For more information, read our guide on What is the concept of budget hotels

2. Affordable Stay vs Cheap Stay: What is the Difference?

Both terms relate to low-cost accommodations, affordable hotels and cheap hotels are not the same.

  • Affordable hotels offer value for money, balancing comfort, cleanliness, and essential services at a reasonable price.
  • Cheap hotels, on the other hand, often prioritize low prices over quality, which can result in compromised comfort or fewer amenities.

Here’s a clearer comparison to help you choose what suits your travel needs:

Affordable Hotels

  • Provide basic but quality amenities (Wi-Fi, clean rooms, good service).
  • Focus on comfort and cleanliness within a reasonable budget.
  • Maintain a better quality-to-price ratio than cheap hotels.
  • Usually have good reviews and offer deals or discounts.
  • Great for families, couples, business travelers, and solo explorers who want budget without compromise.

Example: OYO Rooms, Treebo hotels, and Fab Hotels – budget-friendly stays with decent amenities, ideal for cost-conscious travellers. Read our detailed comparison on OYO vs Treebo vs Fab Hotel: Which budget hotel chain is better in India?

Cheap Hotels

  • Focus on ultra-low prices, often with fewer amenities or services.
  • May compromise on quality to cut costs.
  • Suitable for backpackers or budget-focused travelers who don’t mind minimal comfort.
  • Not always in the best locations or maintained to higher standards.

Example: Some Airbnb rentals or no-frills lodges with rock-bottom pricing but basic facilities.

So, Which Should You Choose?

It depends on your priorities:

If you’re just looking for a cheap place to crash, a cheap hotel may work—but be sure to check reviews!🔸 Affordable Hotels: Comfort Without High Cost

  • Cleanliness
  • Safety
  • Actual value for money

Reviews often highlight small issues or great experiences that listings don’t mention.

10. Stay Outside the City Center

Accommodations in city centers or near major landmarks are typically more expensive.
