There are only 20 temples remaining in Khajuraho. They are distributed in three different groups.  These temples belong to two different religions – Hinduism and Jainism in the Chhatarpur, district of Madhya Pradesh, India. They are about 175 km from southeast of Jhansi, 10 km from Azad Nagar, 9 km from Rajnagar, and 49 km from the district place of Chhatarpur. These monuments are declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. These temples have exquisite carvings and architecture.

Who Built Khajuraho Temples

Most of the Khajuraho temples were built by Chandela Dynasty which was the ruler at that time. Khajuraho temples are located in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh state of India. The purpose of these temples is to represent happiness and fertility among the people. The Lakshmana Temple was built in 954 EC by King Dhanga to celebrate the independence from the Gurjara- Pratihara rulers.  The most famous temple in Khajuraho is Kandaria Mahadeva temple was built in 950 to 1050 EC and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

900-Year-Old Parrot Lady

The 900-Year-Old Parrot Lady in Khajuraho is a 12th-century statue depicting a woman with a parrot near her ear. The statue was seized from a person in Canada and handed over to the Prime Minister of India in 2015. It is a three-foot-long sculpture exquisitely carved lady. It is believed that Parrot Lady may be the queen of Khajuraho portrayed as the majestic “Abhisarika”. 

Pandav Caves And Falls

Pandav caves and waterfalls are located inside the Panna National Park at a distance of 34 km in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, India. At the foot of the fall, there are some ancient caves overlooking a large pool of water. It is believed that the Pandav of Mahabharata have spent a part of their exile here. Pandav Fall is one of the scenic waterfalls and a top tourist destination in Khajuraho. The height of the waterfall is 30 meters. Khajuraho Dance Festival is a week-long event aimed to promote Indian classical dance styles like Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam, and Kathakali. This dance festival is the top festival in the country and is Nationally and Internationally acclaimed festival. This festival is celebrated every year in the month of February from the 20th to the 26th. The artist performs against the backdrop of historical monuments.

Khajuraho has two types of temples – Hindu temples and Jain Temples. Both types of temples are very old with amazing erotic sculptures. Some of the famous Jain Temples in Khajuraho are Swarnodaya Digambar Atishaya Tirth Kshetra, Bhagwat Parshvanatha Digamber Jain Mandir, and Bhagwan Shantinath Jain Mandir. How To Reach Khajuraho By Train, Flight, and Road

Mahoba is the nearest railway station to Khajuraho located at a distance of 63 km from Khajuraho. The regular train Khajuraho – Hazrat Nizamuddin Express has daily connectivity to Khajuraho. Generally, the tourist reaching Khajuraho prefers to arrive at Jhansi railway station and hire a taxi to Khajuraho. The cheapest way to reach Khajuraho is by train.

Khajuraho Airport is the nearest domestic airport that serves the cities of Khajuraho and Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh, India. The easiest way to reach Khajuraho is by flight. Khajuraho is well connected to the major cities in India that include New Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Allahabad, and Varanasi. The airport is 3 km from Khajuraho, 4 km from the railway station, and 40 km from Chhatarpur.
